On the night of January, 20th 1892, the three masted schooner, HP Kirkham, encountered a violent winter squall and grounded on the Rose and Crown Shoal approximately 15 miles southeast of Nantucket's Great Point.
The following day, seven lifesavers from the Coskata life saving station, embarked on what is heralded as one of the most dramatic and courageous rescues in the history of the United States Life Saving Service.
